Suns Bursts Out With New Uniforms

The Phoenix Suns have transformed into a contending team over the past few seasons. Now as they prepare for a full season with stars Kevin Durant and newly acquired guard Bradley Beal teaming up with Devin Booker, the Suns decided it was time for an updated look. Today, the team revealed new Icon and Association uniforms for the 2023-24.

The new jerseys are a modernized and updated version of their throwback sunburst jerseys from the 90s. The original uniforms made their debut on November 7, 1992 in a win against the Los Angeles Clippers. The design has actually been discussed for a couple of years before the debut, which coincidentally were revealed the same season that Charles Barkley joined the franchise. It was the team’s 25th anniversary and they wanted a new look. The original uniforms shows a basketball depicted as a rising sun with a diagonal sash design running between the team name and the number. The lettering also has a minor drop shadow along with two colored accent lines on the collar and sleeves, as well as having “Phoenix” spelled out on the shorts. The rising sun took inspiration from the Portland Trailblazers’ sash design. The Suns however wanted their sash to represent the franchise being up and coming at the time.

The modern version has a streaking sunburst on the chest with a white basketball as a the sun. These uniforms also have the team name placed directly onto the streaking sun in white lettering with the number below the burst. The burst also is more perfectly rectangular than the previous ones. The numbers feature a more prominent drop shadow as the white jerseys have purple numbers and the purple jerseys have white numbers, but both have an orange drop shadow. The shorts display a continuous sun streak on the bottom, a stitched “Phoenix” patch on the left leg above the streak, and an original sunburst emblem on the belt of the shorts.

Josh Bartelstein, the Suns Chief Executive Officer, says that “These new uniforms seamlessly blend the nostalgia of the past with the excitement of the future as we begin the next great era of Suns basketball.” With their new star studded roster and new ownership, the Suns look towards building a new culture and winning identity for the city of Phoenix.
